Crime scenes of 1920s

Today I would like to talk to you about a TV series I have started watching recently thanks to my friend’s recommendation. Sadly, this friend only started the series because Netflix announced they were going to take it off their website, but, as we say, better late than never!

The series I’m talking about is titled “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”. It’s an Australian production, originally broadcasted between 2012 and 2015 for 3 seasons, based on the novels by Kerry Greenwood. It tells the story of a titular protagonist, Miss Fisher, who’s a woman in her middle age, coming from a very wealthy family. She’s smart, clever, charming, well-educated and thanks to her fortune, she doesn’t have to bother to have a proper job. This and her curiosity and willingness to solve crimes and find murderers leads her to become a private detective. Since then, she helps the police (although sometimes unwelcomed) to take charge of the underworld of Melbourne. The series focuses mostly on her private and professional issues, along with her advancing relationship with the Inspector John, and lives of Dot, who is her servant, friend and companion in solving mysteries, and Hugh, Inspector John’s right-hand man.

The story happens in late 1920s, some time after the World War I. I think what I like the most about it is its aesthetics. Everything looks so elegant with stunning outfits of Miss Fisher, always looking like a lady of her class, beautiful interiors or expensive jewellery and yet, you don’t get the feeling that you’re watching a woman from aristocracy: she is free, independent, she does what she wants, not afraid to risk or break the rules. She’s a lady who would opt for chasing a criminal with her little gun than drinking tea at 5 p.m. with other women of her level. You can see also an interesting contrast between her life and the whole Melbourne’s underworld. Besides, funny dialogues, great chemistry between Miss Fisher and the Inspector John and the voice of the main actress, Essie Davis (there’s just something so hypnotising about such a clear voice of hers) make the whole series very entertaining and easy to watch.

This is of course my opinion but I can truly say I recommend this series to you. Unfortunately, it’s not available on Netflix anymore – but the Internet is such a big space that I’m pretty sure it still won’t be hard to find it there.
