Creeps among us

Today I’m coming to you with another recommendation. This time it’s a movie I watched last weekend, titled Creep . Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creep_(2014_film) I must admit, I am a fan of horror and thriller movies. I know these aren’t very ambitious genres and they are often productions of poor quality, but there’s always this haunting sense of fear and thrill. You never know what’s going to happen next and sometimes when you do, you want to just close your eyes and stop watching. I had a similar feelings while watching Creep . It’s an American production, premiered in 2014 and directed by Patrick Brice. It’s a movie of just two actors and tells a story about a guy who finds out that he’s terminally ill so he decides to record a video diary for his unborn baby. To do that, he employs a guy named Aaron and they spend a whole day together. Of course, it turns out later that not everything is what it seems to be. It’s not the best thriller movie in the world but I found

A couple of weeks ago I recommended you a series called “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” which is a nice, mysterious TV show with a colourful, aristocratic protagonist, titular Miss Fisher. This time I’m coming to you with another detective series titled “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency”. Source: https://www.amazon.com/Dirk-Gently-S2-Elijah-Wood/dp/B07544M645 This series might be about a detective, just like “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”, but in this case, the creators of the series give us a total rollercoaster ride. The TV show, based on a book of the same name, starts with a bloody, horrible murder of several people committed in a hotel room. Then, a series of unexpected events occurs which makes one of the main protagonists, Todd (played by Elijah Wood which one can recognise from “The Lord of the Rings” movies) seem responsible for the whole thing. Since then, he starts collaborating (although not completely of his own choosing) with a titular character, Dirk Gently,

New Year!

2020 is over. This horrible year, a year of disasters, calamities, hated by everyone, came to an end (finally, one would like to say). While it is doubtless that this past year experienced us all and put us in times that we would rather forget about, it is rather obvious that a change of number is only a change of number and we will still have to experience failures, bad things and disappointments, just as we did before. Despite that, it comes as no surprise people are starting this year with willingness to live and big hopes for changes. When I look back at 2020, I can’t say it was a bad year for me, although it was mostly a year of the pandemic. I have already written about it in one of the earlier posts. As for 2021, I must admit I have no expectations because the past year showed us that we really can’t be sure of anything. There are a few things that, I hope, will happen, but if 2020 taught me something, it is that I really shouldn’t take everything for granted. I don’t consider

Post-Christmas

As I’m writing this post, my stomach is full of pierogi and herrings and the blood in my veins has transformed into the red borsch and my grandma’s sweet apricot liqueur (low-alcohol, don’t worry). Of course food is not the most important thing now, but since it’s Christmas, why not indulge ourselves with the feasts full of gorgeous meals, delicious sweets and high class beverages worth Greek gods. Well, Christmas is already over and I hope everyone spent them the way they like the most, with family or by themselves, with tons of homemade food or pierogi bought in the supermarket, with presents under the Christmas tree or watching “Home Alone” for the hundredth time. Personally, it has been another very nice Christmas for me, spent with my family and friends who are dear to us, as Frank Sinatra sang. Despite the whole situation with the coronavirus, I managed to spend this Christmas with my parents and visit my grandparents. It felt like it was some sort of wind of normality – we wer

Today I would like to talk to you about a TV series I have started watching recently thanks to my friend’s recommendation. Sadly, this friend only started the series because Netflix announced they were going to take it off their website, but, as we say, better late than never! The series I’m talking about is titled “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”. It’s an Australian production, originally broadcasted between 2012 and 2015 for 3 seasons, based on the novels by Kerry Greenwood. It tells the story of a titular protagonist, Miss Fisher, who’s a woman in her middle age, coming from a very wealthy family. She’s smart, clever, charming, well-educated and thanks to her fortune, she doesn’t have to bother to have a proper job. This and her curiosity and willingness to solve crimes and find murderers leads her to become a private detective. Since then, she helps the police (although sometimes unwelcomed) to take charge of the underworld of Melbourne. The series focuses mostly on her private a

December

Here it is. December. A month of creaking snow, colourful lights and Santa Claus waiting for us at every corner. Well, from those three things this year we are left only with the second one. Snow in the most of Poland has already become quite rare phenomenon. About Santa... I guess it’s because he had to replace a beard for a mask. I really like December. It’s usually a nice relief after rainy and grey November. Although days are shorter and we have our lamps turned on more often than turned off, December starts with this feeling of incoming Christmas time. It’s a month when you can officially start playing Christmas songs and it probably won’t be considered too early. People start decorating their houses, they put enormous Christmas trees in front of the shopping galleries or at Old Market Squares and everything just feels differently. I have turned 23 this year and when Christmas is coming, my inner child wakes up every year. I hear all the time adults saying that Christmas is no

Speaking of travelling, it turns out hard not to mention the Erasmus programme. I am pretty sure every student has heard about it and all of its advantages. I took part in this programme in 2018 when I went to the city of Seville in southern Spain. I spent there almost five months, from the early September till the end of January and I think I won’t exaggerate if I say it has been the best experience of my life so far. There are, obviously, many reasons why you probably should take part in the Erasmus exchange. As the student of languages, one of the most important aspects for me is improving language skills. Frankly speaking, I think it would be impossible to live in a foreign country and study in your target language (with other native speakers) and not to improve. It happens almost automatically – you can talk with your flatmates, classmates, cashiers in the shops, people on the street, integrate with local community and with that, you become not only more fluent, but also more ou
