Post-Christmas

As I’m writing this post, my stomach is full of pierogi and herrings and the blood in my veins has transformed into the red borsch and my grandma’s sweet apricot liqueur (low-alcohol, don’t worry). Of course food is not the most important thing now, but since it’s Christmas, why not indulge ourselves with the feasts full of gorgeous meals, delicious sweets and high class beverages worth Greek gods. Well, Christmas is already over and I hope everyone spent them the way they like the most, with family or by themselves, with tons of homemade food or pierogi bought in the supermarket, with presents under the Christmas tree or watching “Home Alone” for the hundredth time. Personally, it has been another very nice Christmas for me, spent with my family and friends who are dear to us, as Frank Sinatra sang. Despite the whole situation with the coronavirus, I managed to spend this Christmas with my parents and visit my grandparents. It felt like it was some sort of wind of normality – we wer...

Crime scenes of 1920s

Today I would like to talk to you about a TV series I have started watching recently thanks to my friend’s recommendation. Sadly, this friend only started the series because Netflix announced they were going to take it off their website, but, as we say, better late than never! The series I’m talking about is titled “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”. It’s an Australian production, originally broadcasted between 2012 and 2015 for 3 seasons, based on the novels by Kerry Greenwood. It tells the story of a titular protagonist, Miss Fisher, who’s a woman in her middle age, coming from a very wealthy family. She’s smart, clever, charming, well-educated and thanks to her fortune, she doesn’t have to bother to have a proper job. This and her curiosity and willingness to solve crimes and find murderers leads her to become a private detective. Since then, she helps the police (although sometimes unwelcomed) to take charge of the underworld of Melbourne. The series focuses mostly on her private a...

December

Here it is. December. A month of creaking snow, colourful lights and Santa Claus waiting for us at every corner. Well, from those three things this year we are left only with the second one. Snow in the most of Poland has already become quite rare phenomenon. About Santa... I guess it’s because he had to replace a beard for a mask. I really like December. It’s usually a nice relief after rainy and grey November. Although days are shorter and we have our lamps turned on more often than turned off, December starts with this feeling of incoming Christmas time. It’s a month when you can officially start playing Christmas songs and it probably won’t be considered too early. People start decorating their houses, they put enormous Christmas trees in front of the shopping galleries or at Old Market Squares and everything just feels differently. I have turned 23 this year and when Christmas is coming, my inner child wakes up every year. I hear all the time adults saying that Christmas is no...

Speaking of travelling, it turns out hard not to mention the Erasmus programme. I am pretty sure every student has heard about it and all of its advantages. I took part in this programme in 2018 when I went to the city of Seville in southern Spain. I spent there almost five months, from the early September till the end of January and I think I won’t exaggerate if I say it has been the best experience of my life so far. There are, obviously, many reasons why you probably should take part in the Erasmus exchange. As the student of languages, one of the most important aspects for me is improving language skills. Frankly speaking, I think it would be impossible to live in a foreign country and study in your target language (with other native speakers) and not to improve. It happens almost automatically – you can talk with your flatmates, classmates, cashiers in the shops, people on the street, integrate with local community and with that, you become not only more fluent, but also more ou...

Getaway weekend

I really like travelling to different places, not only abroad but also inside Poland, even especially inside Poland because I think we often tend to elevate different places from the whole world and underestimate what we have in our own country (which, of course, doesn’t mean that “abroad” is equivalent to “bad”). I had hopes that 2020 was going to be a year in which I would finally visit some of my dreamy destinations. Unfortunately, as we all know, this year has put paid to plans of many people, including mine. However, despite increasing numbers of new cases of COVID-19 in Poland, I managed to make a little trip to the Karkonosze mountains, and most exactly to Szklarska PorÄ™ba.  I t’s a small, picturesque town near the Czech border. It was my first time there and I had to say I fell in love with this town for its atmosphere and beautiful views and landscapes, monumental mountains, big rocks of different shapes, colourful trees, little streams and nice food. I went there i...

2020 aka the most horrible year ever

A lot of people have been saying that 2020 has been the worst year ever. Obviously, it comes as no surprise that they think so; a lot of horrible things have been going on lately so I probably shouldn’t be surprised people are literally hating 2020.  Global pandemic, economical crisis, environmental issues, Polish women having their rights taken away… And even though I can’t tell 2020 has been the best year of my life so far, I personally feel like I don’t have much to complain about because among all of those things, I think I have never experienced so many different things in my life; I managed to finish my thesis and therefore my Bachelor studies. It took me almost a year to accomplish it but at last I did it and even if it doesn’t seem like such a big deal for someone, it was a huge step for me which, in the end, encouraged me to start the Master studies from Spanish philology – a course I wanted to start since the beginning of my academical journey. I also started my fi...
